Herpes Treatments



Although there is no way to eradicate the herpes virus once it is in the body, and there is no cure yet, there are several methods of treatment for the HSV.


Herpes medications

stop the growth of HSV preventing outbreaks, they can shorten the length of time an outbreak lasts, and can increase the time it takes to heal. Your treatment with antiviral drugs can be episodic or suppressive.

Episodic treatments are taken as an outbreak occurs and are most effective when taken as soon as prodromal symptoms appear; and then continued for the next 5-7 days or until healing occurs.

Suppressive treatments are medications taken daily. You may benefit from daily suppressive therapy if your outbreaks happen six or more times a year. (Occasionally check with your doctor to see if you should stop the daily antiviral medication for a while, just to see if your outbreaks still recur as frequently as they used to.)
